Why do people find the exorcist scary?

The Exorcist relied far too much on splatter effects which have become very dated (as you’ve pointed out), but I think it can still pack a punch if you’re watching it in the right mood (and sitting in a room alone with the lights off, NOT gathered round a bucket of popcorn with your giggling friends). Let’s face it, the actual concept of a 12 year old child stabbing herself in the c*nt and yelling things like “F*CK ME! LICK ME!” and “YOUR MOTHER SUCKS C0CKS IN HELL!” IS pretty shocking, even though it’s not her real voice and they’re just using puppets and sh*t. I can understand many people feeling queasy at the whole thing, even now. And don’t underestimate the impact that the film had when it was released. There were much better horror films around at the time, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original, not the sequels or the crappy remakes) – but that was a low budget independent movie that wasn’t widely released, and was seen mainly by horror fans. The thing about The Exorcist
