Why do people dock the tails and ears of non-working dogs?

Look up “Happy Tail”. That should explain the docking. Some breeds have very long, very brittle, very taut tails that can burst open at the slightest thump on a wall. The breed I know of that has most problems with this is the doberman. All breeders I know dock all their puppies, because almost all of them would end up with a tail that either broke or burst open or both, and this requires surgery to correct, and a lot of the time it doesn’t even correct the problem, and the tail can, a lot of the time, never heal properly, and simply continue to burst open. It’s sad, but it happens. I’ve heard it happen in a lot of other breeds that are supposed to have their tails docked. The people wanted to be ‘humane’ and not dock the tails, and then ended up with enormous vet bills because the pup’s tail broke and burst open and is in constant pain because of it. These people have said they’ll never leave a breed that’s supposed to be docked undocked.
