Why do people continue to live near to volcanoes?

The same reason people build cities on fault lines, and power plants in the way of hurricanes. That’s where they have always lived, it’s home. I forget the actual psychological term, but essentially people figure they’ve sunk enough time and effort in to this thing (in this case their home) that they don’t want to start over somewhere else. Say you have a junker of a car. You’ve already paid it off, had it for a decade, and sunk $10000 in maintenance in it. It’ll cost $2000 to get it running again, or for $3000, you could get a slightly better, more reliable car. 90% of folks will just repair it, sinking $12000 into it now, and fix it again and again when it breaks. Nobody ever accused humans of being rational.
