Why do people call staffies pitbull breed??
They are most certainly NOT the same dog, but they are grouped under the category ‘Pit Bull Type Dogs’ by most. This included APBTs, AmStaffs, Staffys, and occasionally Bull Terriers and American Bulldogs. It was the original cross between bulldog and terrier that yeilded the Staffordshire Bull terrier that we know of today. They were the original bull baiters and paved the way for the Pit Bull and AmStaff. Once bull baiting was outlawed in England in the early 19th century, people turned to dogfighting for sport. Again, they began with bulldogs (perhaps a taller version) and terriers, producing what they called the bull-and-terrier…later to be known as the Pit Bull. It’s not known what specific breeds of terrier were used in the mixing, but it’s clear that the terrier used to produce the staffy, and that used to produce the pit bull are different. Pits were brought to the US in the 1870s and worked as farm dogs. In 1898, the UKC recognized them as the American Pit Bull Terrier. The
