Why do people call disabled people “inspirations” just because they e disabled?
To many people the very notion of people with disabilities even going to college is new. Older people in particular got used to believing that people with disabilities got put into nursing homes, institutions and other care facilities. They rarely went to “regular” schools and they certainly didn’t go to college. This is a throwback to the time when it was believed that people with disabilities had to be kept segregated from “regular” people. Doctors would even recommend, in cases where children were severely disabled, that the parents put them away and never think of them again. So very sad. Hopefully as things continue to evolve WRT disability rights and activism, the way people with disabilities are perceived will also evolve. Then everybody will come to realize that people with disabilities are just that–people.
