Why do people blame Christianity for the Fall of the Roman Empire?
If Christianity was the main factor behind the fall of empire, is matter of debate going back to medieval times. Even Gibbons argued 230 years ago that the spread of Christianity undermined the fabric of ancient world. Christianity as the main and only tolerable faith in the Roman Empire indeed was ONE of the causes behind the fall. Since Christianity became the official religion of the empire in 395, everything started to fall apart. The barbarian rides had increased, the army became disloyal, tax base decreased, and the entire system collapsed within 80 years after this law. Barbarians who were settling within the Roman territory were predominantly Christian. The Vandals, Visigoths, Alans were all christianized, while majority of citizens in Rome were still pagan in 410.
