Why do people become “Special Constables” – Unpaid police officers?

I have never heard of “Special Constables” (in the US), but I imagine they do it for the same reason many of us go into law enforcement as a career – they want to have a positive impact on their community. Most probably become volunteer officers so that they can do something useful in their spare time, without having to quit their good paying jobs.

It used to be people that were too short to join the regular police, it’s changed now of course they take you even if you are a shorthouse, just to avoid ‘heightism’ accusations

Joan – how small-minded of you!! Specials do a good job (in difficult circumstances) in support of full time cops. Many use it as a tool to get into the job full time. Why not? It gives them an ideal insight into the job and is a valuable rung on the ladder. I have worked with many Specials in the past and had no qualms about working with them. Most were keen to learn and enthusiastic. I couldn’t fault them. Many people that are commenting are voicing their opinions on the back of nil experience!!
