Why do people act in a self destructive way?

0

It is a way of coping with emotional stress that is very intense and can’t be handled. To some, self destructive actions are a way of converting emotional problems that are too hard to deal with into physical problems that are easier to deal with.

When people start self-destructive behaviours, they often don’t realise that the behaviour is or will become self destructive – they could be doing it for a number of reasons – to fit in, to ‘experiment’, to deal with pain or anger, or they see it as the only way to ‘escape’ their personal situation. Once they begin this behaviour, it can become an important way for them to deal with issues, or have some benefit to them (such as raising money or making them feel good about themselves). People can also become stuck in a vicious cycle because they can’t see any other way out other than continuing the behaviour.
