Why do Pagans jump a besom after handfasting?

Honestly, I think it does go back as far as the phrase “leap of faith” And when you jump touching it’s supposed to be bad luck, you know, kicking it and falling flat on your face isn’t the best first thing to do after your handfasting! So lift the dress and jump high! Blessed Be!!

I suspect it’s got something to do with the old Romany marriage ritual. The couple would hold hands and jump over a heap of gorse, otherwise known as broom, which is a yellow-flowering bushy plant, and then they’d be declared married. The gipsies were doing this in the 20th century, and maybe still do.
