Why do otherwise intelligent people come under the spell of Scientology?
…a good friend of mine got drawn in to Scientology. So a group of us decided to find out what it was all about and see what we could do to get him out. We started by attending one of their free public classes. Ron Hubbard may have been an indifferent science fiction writer but he was a very quick study with psychological techniques. Everything in the session was done to make you feel special, warm, and included. Many of the same procedures are included in those team-building programs used in business and other venues. At the end even those of us who were there to deliberately “know the enemy” felt a certain longing to come back and become a part of this warm and friendly group. They focused on individuals who had a need to belong. They were down and out for various reasons ranging from bad luck to mental problems or addiction. For those who really needed to belong, they were hired as an unpaid worker for the Church and lived “for free” in communal dorms with food and clothing supplie
