Why do other speakers (including some larger NHTs) sound so megaphone-like compared to the Super Zero?
Take a look at how a megaphone works. Sound waves are very short at the highest musical frequencies (less than an inch) and very long at low frequencies (40 ft. or more). A megaphone is an elongated cone like a dunce cap with the point cut off. You speak in the small end and point the large end where you want to project sound. The cone gathers and directs in one direction any wavelengths that fit within its large end making them more audible at greater distance. If you’ve heard a voice through a megaphone, it sounds thin because the rich bass tones are too large to be directed, but the mid and treble tones are clearly audible. It makes voices sound very unnatural. The truth is, the woofers in most speakers act (and sound) just like megaphones, but much less so in the Super Zero, because its woofer is so small (only about 4″) that it hardly becomes directional by the time the tweeter takes over. As a result of this and otherwise impeccable engineering, the SZs sound completely open and
