Why do North Carolina nurse practitioners need a PAC?
NP practice is established in state law. The state legislature has the authority to change current laws and to create new laws which impact NP practice, the ability of citizens to access NP care, and our ability to be reimbursed by Medicaid, managed care organizations and private insurers. Legislators must understand NP practice in order to introduce, debate and pass laws that do not restrict our practice or restrict citizens’ full access to nurse practitioner care. To do this effectively they need our help in several ways. They certainly need NPs as a reliable resource about health care in general and our practice in particular. Supportive legislators also need our financial help to win re-election to office. The costs of House and Senate campaigns have become incredibly expensive, well exceeding $100,000 in almost all cases.
