Why do Needle Exchange Programs make sense?
• Sharing needles is a common practice among IDUs. • Many drug users inject multiple times a day increasing the odds of needles being shared and potential transmission of HIV, and hepatitis B and C. • Needle exchange programs do not promote drug use—these programs are set up to reduce harm to the IDU, their partners and children and the community at large. • Fewer used needles discarded in the community means less risk of needle-stick injuries to the general public. Where are Needle Exchange Programs located? Needle Exchange services are provided through a variety of health unit offices, pharmacies and street outreach centres across Simcoe Muskoka. Services are available in Barrie, Bracebridge, Huntsville, Gravenhurst, Orillia, Midland, Collingwood and Alliston.
