Why do most TV networks show reruns during the summer?

0

This is a lefltover habit from when TV first got really going; most families in the 60’s took vacations in the summer; kids were out of school and in Vacation Bible School or just outside, so they weren’t watching TV; families were planning for their vacations so TV just wasn’t a priority. So networks started showing reruns in the summer, which saved them money, and gave them time to start filiming new shows. Of course, those were the days when the season began in September and ended in May. It really doesn’t make sense anymore, because the cable networks start their season when they want to, and that’s why they’ve picked up so many viewers who used to watch the networks. Not really good strategic planning on the networks’ part.
