Why do most Taiwan and Hongkong pop singers not popular in the Philippines? Is it the language?
Why ARE most pop singers from Taiwan and Hong Kong not that popular in the Philippines? This is a good question. Many pop singers in Taiwan are marketed (and have as much musical value) as a bag of potato chips. There is an expiry date on the bottom. The pop stars (L.A. Boyz, 5566, F-4, Energy, et cetera, ad nauseum) are pre-fabricated and made to bring in as much advertising revenue as they can in Taiwan in a short period of time. In order to be truly popular one has to be talented and have lasting value – very few of the pop bands I have listed above did, or do, and they soon go on to further careers in advertising, and if they are truly interested in music – music! The bottom line is that they are not musicians, they sing and they dance, and may not even have creative control over the pop they produce. This is the business. Profit is the motive. In the Philippines musicians can play guitars and sing.
