People who don’t like that sort of music think it lacks any sort of melody, and it’s repetitive and boring.

I think a lot of it is to do with the negative publicity the genre has received. The same happened with heavy metal a few years ago. The original hip/hop artists were singing ABOUT life on the streets, in sometimes very impoverished, problematic areas- there’s no way of talking about this without talking about drugs, gangs, guns, and other things a lot of people find slightly distasteful. But just rapping in the persona of a man who has shot someone and feels good about it as a result doesn’t mean you personally condone such behaviour (People who fail to grasp this concept would do well to look up the principle of Dramatic Monologue, which has been used by a number of highly respected poets for years). Unfortunately there are both young rap fans and (more often) reactionary journalists who have trouble with this.
