Why do most (or at least loads of them) British pubs have animal names?

because *most* British pubs are very very old and were opened in the times when many people could not read – but they could recognise a picture outside a pub – the easiest things to remember were things they saw everyday – like Swans, Ducks, horses, etc.so you could tell your friends to meet you “in the Swan pub” even though none of your friends could read but could recognise the picture of the Swan outside. The trend of naming pubs after animals has continued because it is a tradition.
