It’s difficult for most people today to understand that only in modern times and mostly in the western countries has clothing becomes so cheap and affordable, that we don’t even think twice about wearing color clothing when we exercise and how repeated washing (in hot or warm water) causes the cloth to fade and wear out faster. Wearing white clothing for activities that involve heavy physical exertion is very common place. The most common and readily available material for most of history is cotton and the natural color is white or more precisely cotton cloth without color dye. They were not dyed with any color because the amount of washing required to keep such clothing clean would very quickly cause whatever color to fade, so plain white color became the default color.
