Why do mean bond enthalpy values differ from those calculated from enthalpy cycles ?

mean bond enthalpies ARE calculated by enthalpy cycles. In special cases the values calculated would not be standard values – eg if you calculated the C-C BE in cyclobutane the value would be lower than the standard value because the bonds in cyclobutane are strained – pulled in to 90 degrees to each other.
