Why do many transition metals exhibit a plus 2 oxidation state in their?
transition metals are formed because of in complete d orbitals..the general electronic configuration..is (n-1)d^1-10 ns^1-2…oxidation states are formed because the energy level of the n-1 d orbital and ns orbital are almost the same so they can loose electrons…here the last s orbital is always full i.e has 2 electrons hense these 2 electrons are given out first when variable oxidation states are to be formed…
