Why do many of the Gallery Thumbnails/Images have rough edges on Horizontal or Vertical lines ?

In order to reduce the image sizes and improve download speeds (from our server) most of the Gallery Images are re-sampled versions of the original high resolution scanned Photographs or Digital Camera pictures, the ‘zig-zag’ effect is the result of the re-sampling process.
