Why do karate clubs place so much emphasis upon kata in their gradings?
Probably because kata represent easily assessable martial exercises by which to judge gradings.Also because all of the martial skills of movement, basics, and self defence are encapsulated within kata, so it makes sense to make them a significant assessment criteria. Personally, I would like to see self-defence skills incorporated into GKR’s gradings as well.
