I have reviewed some excellent research on this subject and found the eight major characteristics of a cult. And we have none of them. Wouldn’t you agree? 1. The group displays unquestioning commitment to its leadership. We are free to question the scriptural conclusions of the governing body and free to search the scriptures with an open mind like the Bereans did. We do not automatically agree with every doctrinal statement issued by our governing body. So that trait does not apply to us. We are not always in complete unity about every doctrine. We have independent spirits and often study the Bible without oversight by elders or any Watchtower study aids. 2. Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged. The Watchtower has always encouraged us to express our honest doubts. It is fine for us to disagree with the doctrines of our organization and nothing bad will happen if we do that.
