Why do Japanese girls dress themselves down?
In Japan, all the girls strive to be ‘kawaii’ (cute). In most western societies, the girls strive to be attractive in a sexualized way, but in Japan it almost reverses. Youth is admirable, and they want their appearance to reflect that. It’s a highly desired aesthetic quality, and people go to all lengths to reflect this. I went to Japan in 2009, and my school regularly hosts Japanese students and it’s always a cute overload. There are huge-eyed charracters to represent everything. In Harajuku, there are different and distinct styles and a lot are from a westerner’s perception, extremely childish; http://www.kilikulu.com/wp-content/uploa… It’s odd to think that a country can have two extremes of traditional and popular-culture and it took some time to adjust. A lot of people think it’s absurd and quite odd, and I agree with them to an extent. I think it’s interesting.
