Why do I need to have a separate consultation visit before having Mohs surgery?
In short, because we do not like surprises (either surprises for us or for our patients). We feel that it is very important to have all of the information about the cancer and about the surgery very clearly laid out before the surgery. The consultation visit is mainly for the exchange of information. We learn more about you (your past history, health, medications, and your cancer). We very closely examine your cancer, its size, location, and type. Based on all of this information, we decide how and when it is best to schedule your surgery. Scheduling is not always simply a matter of giving the next available appointment. Complicated cancers may require more attention, and we may need to schedule this for a day when other complex surgeries are not going on at the same time. We also use the consultation visit to make sure that you understand everything that will happen on the day of the surgery.
