Why do I have to use a conformal projection (transverse Mercator, Lambert conformal, one of the state plane systems, etc) for my registration data when I want to transform the image with RasTools?

Conformal projections have the property of constant scale in any direction around a point in the projection. Other projections (such as the “rectangular azimuthal” used as the default MapInfo projection) do not have this property.
