EPS and other vector images like Illustrator files are converted by After Effects into bitmaps when it render output. This conversion process slows down the initial rendering but doesn’t prevent it. After Effects 7 on Macintosh has trouble sometimes when performing this conversion where multiple processes accessing the same footage sometimes fails. It isn’t known if this has been resolved in After Effects CS3.
