Why do I find the passwords of the users, albeit encrypted, in the passwd NIS map?
• A: NIS, formerly known as “Yellow Pages”, was first implemented on SunOS 4.x (now known as Solaris 1.x). Solaris 1.x didn’t have a separate shadow file. Instead, the passwords were stored in the second column of /etc/passwd, the same location where they shine up in your passwd NIS map, for reasons of backwards compatibility. This is also the reason, why you wouldn’t find a shadow NIS map.
