Why do I cut myself using a Merkur safety razor?
A little training is required to get a good shave from a Merkur safety razor. You should hold the razor at an angle of 30 degrees to the skin, work using small, short strokes and, with the help of your free hand, ensure the skin you are shaving is stretched. It isn’t possible to maintain the 30 degree angle everywhere – on the upper lip, for example – but try to do so where you can. You should start on the lower settings of the razor, and then increase it if you feel you are not getting the results you want. Be careful, however, as the higher the setting the better the razor bites. Allow the razor to glide over the skin and don’t press on! Applying more pressure will not improve the result; rather the reverse, the skin will become irritated and red. As we said, it can take a bit of time getting started with a safety razor of this type but – relax – you are guaranteed to be very happy with the results.
