Why do horses get cracks in their hoof wall?
Many factors cause hoof cracks. In most cases, the number one reason is the imbalance of a hoof. If a horse is not trimmed or shod on a regular basis, stress cracks may develop due to improper care. Pregnant mares can also form cracks due to the excess weight. Coronary band injuries can also be the cause of hoof cracking or wall separation. The environment is another factor that causes cracks in hoof walls. Treating cracked hoof walls consist of shoeing the cracked hoof and giving time to let the crack grow out.
