Why Do Hall of Fame Baseball Players Sell Their Memorabilia?
Well, first as a collector, let me just say how pleased I am that they do! From both a personal collecting and a professional interest, items from these players are some of the most coveted in the hobby. Not only do they have iron-clad provenance, they have the added appeal of direct lineage – straight from the player to collector. It doesn’t get much better than that! But I understand the question – and the ensuing bafflement. Why on earth would a great player – a Hall of Fame player to boot – ever part with the “stuff” that symbolizes their greatest achievements? Perhaps the most obvious answer is – because they can. They are their items. And whether they keep them, sell them, will them or donate them – it’s their business.
