Why do grubs taste like pickled snot balls?
I steam the remaining meat and eat with melted butter/lemon juice. The white meat has a wonderful, sweet earthy flavor, similar to crayfish tails. I have also eaten Australian “Wictchetty grubs”, but I cook in the same manner as the above Japanese grubs. Again, the meat is sweet and crayfish-like. I, like most of you, will NOT eat the grubs live, or uncooked.
