Why do furniture stores act so excited when they go out of business?
When you see a highly advertised GOB sale, it is being run by a company that specializes in those types of liquidation sales. They are excited because they are the only ones coming out on top. They are used because the struggling company does not have any cash or credit to buy merchandise or advertising. So the outside company does. They also bring in their own salespeople who have a reputation for saying anything to get a sale because they will have moved on to the next town by the time you realize you got screwed. Also, the masses are stupid and think they are getting something for nothing. This is rarely the case. The purpose of a GOB sale is to liquidate current inventory. But in reality, a lot of merchandise (usually inferior to the store’s normal quality) is brought in on top of the current inventory. (In many states, this is illegal but seldom enforced.)
