Why do europeans believe that American TV shows are realistic potrayals of the US?

I’ve lived in eight countries on three continents, but I am from the US. I would say that the assumption is true. Americans ape TV so much that convergence has been achieved. I’ve heard people quoting “The Brady Bunch” episodes as examples to live by. I’ve seen nearly everyone make sure that they watch the news so that they know what to say, what to think. I say this because I don’t watch the news, yet I’ll hear a particular situation depicted on TV news parrotted the same exact way by 5 or 10 different people. It’s as if they are deliberately seeking out ways to be brainwashed! Go and live in a foreign country for a while. You’ll find out how much more informed and deliberate most people are, how few are willing to take whatever they see on TV at face value. And you’ll find almost nobody who copies what they see on TV as the way to live.
