See the asnwer lies in the stability of the nucleus. A nucleus as you know contains both protons and neutrons. Through electrostatic forces proton proton repulsion causes a force to decay nucleus. But on the other hand the strong and weak nuclear forces help in keeping nucleus together. But as number of protons increase, we need more neutrons for stronger nuclear forces to overcome electrostatic forces. Now as nucleons exceed in number, the nucleus becomes more and more heavy and so unstable, and hence the decay is easy and supportive. You can look up at Nuclear stability graph, you’ll know that smaller nuclei combine to give middle ones and larger decompose to give middle ones… Indicating that both smaller and larger nuclei are unstable…
