Why do dogs see in black&white?
The belief that dogs only see in black and white has been dispelled by many recent studies. For years, the belief existed that dogs were color blind or saw things in varying shades of gray. It is now known this is not the case, as dogs can see some color.An Interesting TestDr. Immanuel Birmelin (author of “How Dogs Think”) has done many studies on a dog’s ability to see color and he recommends running an experiment. Place one green bowl and one blue bowl in front of your dog, with a treat in the green bowl only. After several feedings, your dog will learn to find food in the green bowl. Now switch the food to the blue bowl. Your dog will likely continue to go for the green bowl. Continue by switching the order of the bowls. By running this experiment several times, you will see that your dog can distinguish the green bowl from the blue bowl. This test shows that dogs can distinguish colors (or at least various shades of gray). More refined tests have revealed that dogs do, in fact, see
