Why do dogs love to roll in nasty-smelling stuff?
Dear Dog Lady, Why does Princess like rolling in the foulest smelling stuff? She hates baths but I seem to be giving them to her regularly. Kaye Oh, Kaye, sorry not to be sympathetic, but Dog Lady thinks its fine for your dog to take a roll in the hay — especially if the hay reeks. Dogs get a thrill from gyrating belly-up in yuck. While Dog Lady doesn’t fully understand this, she respects the urge. Rolling in rot is a putrid pooch passion. It’s not bad; it’s instinctual. Dogs lap up certain scents while leaving their own odors behind for the next unholy roller. Sure, you could try to intervene when Princess starts to dive into something you absolutely can’t stomach. Dog Lady, for example, draws the line at goose poop. If you keep Princess on her leash, you will have better control when your pet dips her shoulder to go into a spontaneous swoon.
