Why do contact lens exams cost more than regular eye examinations?
The evaluation of contact lenses involves more than just obtaining the proper number for vision. A contact lens must interact with the eye in such a way so as not to disrupt the physiology of the front surface of the eye. This requires the lens to be evaluated upon insertion and after the lens has been on the eye for several hours. Patients who intend to wear their contact lenses overnight must be especially wary of this. This evaluation is typically done over at least two visits. This means more time spent with the doctor. Since evaluation fees are based on time spent with the doctor, this service will cost more.
