Why do Conservatives consider Abraham Lincoln the worst president ever?
Lincoln did not allow states the right to secede, which was not prohibited my the constitution, and therefore the power to secede was left to the states. Lincoln and the North also refused to allow states the right to determine their own trade tariffs, something also constitutionally left to the states since the commerce was not between states. Lastly, the issue of slavery. Slavery is a moral wrong and I will never say otherwise, but from a constitutional standpoint that was another issue that should have been left to the states. All the Federal government could have done was prohibited the sale of slaves between different states. It’s really no different than issues like gay marriage, abortion, and health care. The federal government has no right to make law on any of those issues so long as any commerce is done within each state (for health care and abortion).
Well, I’m no historian, and slavery did end under Lincoln, but he also waged a completely unconstitutional war on the south when they seceded. The Constitution allows a state (or group of states) to secede, so there was no justification for the Union to fight the Confederacy to insist they stay in the Union. Maybe that has something to do with it. However, this is one man’s blog of his own musings. Nowhere did he cite any poll of any type. This is not “poll after poll.” You clearly made that part up. Please don’t lie. You sound like Obama.
In short, Lincoln exploited the issue of slavery in order to expand the powers of the federal government and trample on states rights. Slavery could’ve been abolished peacefully as it had been in other countries that had it, but instead he took it upon himself to wage a bloody war against his own countrymen.
