Why do Christians practice abstinence?

Once the floodgates are opened, there is no stopping them back up. But until the sexual nature of our bodies has been triggered active, abstinence is no problem.

I don’t believe that anyone is truly abstinent. Most people DO masturbate, even Christians. Hey, if God created us with the desire, then there can’t be anything wrong with it.

..yes.. you are right that humans have physical needs and that not everyone can contain those needs in the most healthy way. However, as humans, we are one step above animals because we are built with the mechanism to choose or reject our instincts. We are above our instincts because we can choose not to react. We are capable of learning about ourselves and modifying our behavior, and animals can’t do that. This is important; it’s what hold you back from dumping trash in your dad’s car when he took your things away. I don’t know much about Christianity or what the belief prohibits, but moderation is the key. Gratifying oneself once too often, one no longer is his own master. In spiritual practice, moderation builds character. In the context of building mental strength to deal with all kinds of life’s situation, moderation makes sense. It takes much more to say “no” than to say “yes.” This, I think, is where the focus should be. Not abstinence for abstinence’s sake.

“Do you want real love?” If genuine love has escaped you thus far, if think you’ve already found that perfect someone, or if regrets and confusion have made you wonder if the love you’ve dreamed of really exists… If you’re like me, you’ve been told that sex is bad. Our generation has been taught how to avoid venereal infections, but what we really want to know is how to find, build, and maintain a relationship of real love. Sex is supposed to be a great gift, so it’s easy to get tired of hearing about the diseases and unwed pregnancy rates. If you’re ready for a different approach, and you want the gift of sex to be as great as it was meant to be, read on. “How do I find love?” Everyone wants love. Everyone longs to give himself or

Abstinence is not bad for your health. I am a christian and myself practiced abstinence until I was married at the age of 21. I lived a healthy lifestyle. I kept myself busy in other activities so that my mind would not be focused on sex. Abstinence is not just a christian thing, some people don’t want to give their body to any and everybody and suffer such things as an unwanted pregnancy or a disease. Now a Preacher molesting a child is just an abomination, if that is a Preacher’s belief to not have a wife and abstain from fornication he should do just that, going into a child is just sick!!! I strongly believe in no sex before marriage.
