Why do chinese people adopt english first names but keep their surnames?
Many Chinese people from Hong Kong have Western first names on their birth certificate mainly because Hong Kong was a colony of UK. Some Chinese prefer to have western first names when they move to western societies because it’s easier for westerners to call their name instead of their original Chinese name which can be difficult to romanize and pronounce in English.
