Why do children require airway evaluations?
Children may require a telescopic examination of the voicebox and windpipe for a variety of reasons. The three main catagories are breathing problems, voice problems, and certain types of swallowing difficulties. Reasons for an airway evaluation include: 1. Noisy and/or difficult breathing (stridor) in a child 2. Children unable to breathe on their own, requiring a breathing tube and ventillator 3. Objects accidentally lodged in the airway (airway foreign body) 4. Recurrent croup 5. Voice concerns/hoarseness 6.
