Why do children have their adenoids removed?
Adenoids are located in the back of the nose above the soft part of the roof of the mouth( the soft palate). Although a small part of the immune system, removal has not been shown to lead to increased severity or frequency of infection. In fact, removal of enlarged/chronically infected adenoids often reduces the risk of ear and sinus infections. The most common reasons for removal are: 1. Enlarged adenoids causing nasal obstruction and snoring (adenoid hypertrophy) 2. Repeated or persistent infection of the adenoids (adenoiditis) or sinuses (sinusitis) 3.
