Why do Cheese Curds Squeak?

0

I have a bag of Wisconsin Cheese Curds on my desk. Because it’s day three, they are losing their freshness. I will throw them out if there are any left on day four. I know they are losing their freshness because they are losing their squeak! See, cheese curds squeak when they are fresh. Louisa Kamps of the NY Times described it as “balloons trying to neck.” Most people I’ve been with have found the squeak to be unnerving. Each bite squeaks the cheese curds multiple times.
