Why do CFLs cost more than incandescent light bulbs?
The incandescent light bulb has been a part of our lives for more than a hundred years, but recent advancements have created more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives. The compact fluorescent lamp costs more than a standard bulb, but offers many advantages.Incandescent BulbsIncandescent bulbs work by passing electricity through a filament, which produces heat and light in response to current. The thin filament eventually oxidizes enough to break, causing the bulb to burn out.CFLsCompact fluorescents are made up of a tube filled with gas that emits ultraviolet rays when exposed to current; these rays react with a coating on the inside of the tube to produce visible light. With no filament to burn out, these bulbs last considerably longer than incandescent bulbs.ComplexityOne reason for the increased cost of CFLs is the voltage regulation necessary to properly light the bulb.
