Kneading is instinctive to a contented kitten or cat. All of our cats were separated from their mothers naturally, when they were starting to hunt, close to or a little over five-six months. If kittens are wandering around a lot, they generally are weaned. So, I think that’s an old wives’ tale since all cats seem to do this, and all cats couldn’t have been taken from their mothers early. All four of our cats knead when they are being held and/or petted. Also, a cat might tuck its head into the crook of the arm while being held, also a sort of return to Mama I suppose. They knead pillows, chairs and even the carpet sometimes. We have one of those handmade stuffed cats, a gift from a friend, that is set on a pillow next to the door. We kept finding it lying on its side and supposed one of the cats was knocking it over while playing~until the day I timed it right and saw what really was happening.
