Why do cats cough up hairballs?

Sally Cathy

When cats groom themselves with their tongue, they inevitably swallow their hairs. Unlike hyenas, cats are not able to digest (or easily pass through) any hair that they swallow. Some of the symptoms that your cat is soon to vomit a hairball include:

  • Dry feces with hair inside
  • Matted fur that is poorly kempt
  • Unusally long litterbox defecation time (constipation)
  • A lack of appetite
  • Lethargy and in some cases irritability

***The best way to prevent hairballs is to regularly groom your cat (daily for at least 5 minutes).
