Why do Canadian movies look and sound so cheap compared to American films?

My position is that the appearance of a film has little to do with its quality. I have seen many quality productions that are cheerfully low budget. However… The primary reason is money. Hollywood has much more money available to throw at their films. The US has a population ten times that of Canada and they have a global distribution network vastly greater than ours – a hegemony in many markets. But that’s only part of the story. The French-language cinema, and their arts and media in general, are more successful than their English-language counterparts. They have a built-in audience of about eight million at home, with additional viewers in France and elsewhere. Qubecois and other French-speaking people prefer to see productions that reflect themselves, their culture
