Why do Buddhists eat meat if they believe in non-violence?

0

Non-violence is to refrain from harming others which is the essential practice in Buddhism. Buddha didn’t encourage people to turn vegetarian but taught not to kill animals for one’s sake. Therefore Buddhists eat meat but they do not kill animals for the sake of eating meat as such action leads to violence. Some Buddhists while taking meat, pray for the animal which is helpful for its rebirth.
