Why do British people hate the word “Soccer” so much?

I don’t think we do! After all, we did invent the name ‘soccer’ (see link below) as well as the word ‘football’ so there’s no need to get angry about something we created. Like all British / American things, I guess its a politeness thing. We call your football ‘football’ but add the prefix ‘American’ to it to differentiate it from ours, thus respecting what your sport is called but ensuring no confusion. So the polite thing to do would be for you to call ours ‘British Football’! But the real reason for the ire is that we tagged the name football for our sport first. Your forefathers should have thought of something original instead of copying us! Personally I hate it whatever you call it.
